For me, hearing loss was like watching hair grow – it happened so gradually that I barely noticed it. Until about three years ago.
Recognizing the need for a change
My adult children were always complaining that I had the TV on too loud. I always arrived at meetings early to secure a spot in the middle of the conference table. If I was at one end or another, I couldn’t hear the whole group. I later realized I had developed many such compensating skills.
At Easter three years ago, I brought cinnamon rolls to a brunch. We were sitting around the table and someone turned to me and said something about the football game on TV, or so I thought. So, I responded with my usual throwaway comment when I couldn’t hear something. “Absolutely!” I answered. Everyone just sort of looked at me strangely, because he had actually just complimented my cinnamon rolls. I felt really silly. I got my hearing tested shortly thereafter and learned that I was a great candidate for hearing aids.
Adjusting to life with full clarity and connectivity
After I got my first, trial pair of hearing aids, I went home and heard my air conditioning click on. I had never heard this before. In fact, I was hearing many sounds that I wasn’t used to, to the point that I had actually convinced myself that there was an intruder in my house. I was terrified, my heart was pounding out of my chest, as I dialed 9-1-1… before realizing that there was no one else in the house. Just me and my new hearing aids.
I recently got the Styletto Connect hearing aids. I love the recharging capabilities. Streaming from TV is much crisper, and the clarity is much better than my previous devices.
I’m the Director of Shared Services for a global engineering firm – that means that I oversee corporate travel, credit cards and expenses reporting.
When I take my calls through my Styletto Connects, it’s fun because they’re nearly invisible to others and my cell phone is just lying there on my desk. Besides the fact that the calls are so clear, I also love to do this because it adds a little humor to my day.
Turning heads while rediscovering the joy of sound
When people walk by and ask me what I’m doing, I just look at them and bring my pinky and thumb to my head and point to the cell phone. They don’t know what to make of it because it looks like I am having a fully-blown conversations with myself. When they finally figure it out, they’re like, “Are you are kidding me?” My colleagues are fascinated with my Styletto Connects. They have become a topic in and of themselves. They think they’re very cool – and I tell them that they’re even cooler because if I am ever bored in a meeting, I can just listen to music and no one will ever know!
