Understanding speech is a complex task for the brain, particularly when there is a lot of competing background noise. This can be very strenuous, especially for people with hearing loss. A new clinical study* shows that using our innovative primax™ hearing aids significantly reduces listening effort. Hearing becomes comfortable and easy, which has a positive impact on quality of life.
The claim: primax technology reduces listening effort
Hearing aid wearers want to hear their conversation partners and understand every single word without feeling tired and drained at the end of the day. Now, thanks to primax, you can listen with less effort and understand speech without straining. These benefits have been confirmed by a study in which subjects’ level of strain was determined by measuring brain activity. The results confirm the high efficacy of our new smart hearing aid features, SPEECH and EchoShield, with which primax hearing aids effectively decipher conversation partners’ voices, even in challenging acoustic situations.
SPEECH analyzes the surrounding environment based on the type of signal and direction and distance from which sound is coming. It then directs the highly-efficient technology inside the hearing aids to pick out your conversation partner’s speech and elevate it above background sounds, reducing the strain required for you to hear and understand what they’re saying. EchoShield assists by subduing reverberation that occurs in high-ceilinged spaces or rooms with a lot of hard, sound-reflective surfaces. The result is clear and crisp sound you can enjoy while exerting less listening effort.
The proof: measuring mental exertion
Hearing tests were performed on adult test subjects in a controlled environment and during hearing situations of varying difficulty. Tests were performed both with and without SPEECH and EchoShield activated, while subjects’ brain activity was recorded by electroencephalography (EEG). Based on the findings of this study, it was concluded that use of these primax functions measurably reduced the listening effort expended by hearing aid wearers.
Study participants corroborated the test values by providing subjective assessments of their experiences testing the primax technology. They rated hearing strain without SPEECH as considerable and with SPEECH activated as slight. For EchoShield, test subjects confirmed a reduction in hearing strain from moderate to slight.
What does all of this mean in the real world? primax hearing aid wearers can sit back and enjoy conversations indoors and outdoors, in echoing halls or during cocktail parties, without constantly straining to hear what they want to hear or struggling to understand what friends and family are saying. You don’t have to take our word for it, though. Contact a hearing care professional and arrange to try out our latest smart hearing aid technology for yourself.
* Study conducted at the University of Northern Colorado, 2015, examined the effectiveness of the new features of primax by collecting and analyzing ongoing EEG data while subjects performed speech testing. For both primax features SPEECH and EchoShield, the objective brain behavior measures revealed a significant reduction in listening effort when the feature was activated.
